A UAE-based startup is offering a path to more sustainable consumption.

Cartlow enables both consumers and retailers to buy and sell pre-owned, certified products through ‘re-commerce’.

Re-commerce is a practice where a company purchases overstock and open-box items from retailers,

as well as pre-owned products from consumers, and then sells them at discounted prices.

These items include laptops, TVs, watches, toys, home appliances and more.

By taking on returned and excess goods from retailers, Cartlow reduces waste and carbon emissions through recycling and reselling.

Research by Coresight Research says re-commerce merchants are growing 20-times faster than

the broader retail market and five-times faster than off-price retailers in the US.

The trend is now gaining traction in the region.

Each year, five billion tons of waste is produced globally from returns that are made up predominantly

of brand-new, fully-functioning or repairable products.

The ensuing landfill waste from this phenomenon poses a detrimental threat to the planet,

while also resulting in the scrapping of products made from precious natural resources.

In most cases, these items are in good shape and fully functional-however unsustainable practices

and certain company regulations lead to retailers simply tossing away these items or selling them at low retrieval rates.

The company, founded and led by Mohammed Sleiman, ex co-founder and Managing Director of

Helpbit (an Amazon-acquired company under souq.com), says it has over 1M active users, 500,000

downloads and has sold more than 100,000 items since launching in the second quarter of 2019.

Each of the products that Cartlow distributes is tested in-house and certified with up to one-year warranty.

Cartlow in January announced its entry into the Saudi market.

إعادة التجارة هي ممارسة تقوم فيها الشركة بشراء مخزون كبير وعناصر مفتوحة من تجار التجزئة ، بالإضافة إلى المنتجات المملوكة مسبقًا من المستهلكين ، ثم بيعها بأسعار مخفضة.

 تشمل هذه العناصر أجهزة الكمبيوتر المحمولة وأجهزة التلفزيون والساعات والألعاب والأجهزة المنزلية والمزيد.

 من خلال استلام البضائع المعادة والزائدة من تجار التجزئة ، يقلل Cartlow من النفايات وانبعاثات الكربون من خلال إعادة التدوير وإعادة البيع.

تشير الأبحاث التي أجرتها Coresight Research إلى أن تجار إعادة التجارة ينموون بمعدل 20 مرة أسرع من سوق التجزئة الأوسع وخمس مرات أسرع من تجار التجزئة غير السعريين في الولايات المتحدة.

في كل عام ، يتم إنتاج خمسة مليارات طن من النفايات على مستوى العالم من العائدات التي تتكون في الغالب من منتجات جديدة تمامًا تعمل بكامل طاقتها أو قابلة للإصلاح. 

تشكل مخلفات مكبات النفايات الناتجة عن هذه الظاهرة تهديدًا ضارًا لكوكب الأرض ، بينما تؤدي أيضًا إلى التخلص من المنتجات المصنوعة من الموارد الطبيعية الثمينة. 

في معظم الحالات ، تكون هذه العناصر في حالة جيدة وتعمل بكامل طاقتها – ولكن الممارسات غير المستدامة ولوائح معينة للشركة تؤدي ببساطة إلى قيام تجار التجزئة برمي هذه العناصر أو بيعها بمعدلات استرداد منخفضة.

تقول الشركة ، التي أسسها وقادها محمد سليمان ، المؤسس المشارك السابق والعضو المنتدب لشركة هيلبيت (شركة استحوذت عليها أمازون تحت موقع souq.com) ، إن لديها أكثر من مليون مستخدم نشط ، و 500000 تنزيل ، وباعت أكثر من 100000 عنصر منذ إطلاقها. في الربع الثاني من عام 2019.

يتم اختبار كل منتج من المنتجات التي توزعها Cartlow داخل الشركة واعتمادها بضمان يصل إلى عام واحد. أعلنت كارتلو في كانون الثاني (يناير) عن دخولها السوق السعودية.
